Te Ahi o Matariki

Nine ahi on the Ātea forecourt, one for each whetū of Matariki. Nightly 6 to 8pm, 10 to 17 July.

Nine fires stand on the Ātea forecourt, one for each whetū of Matariki, each carrying its star name in steel. Matariki is our time to remember the ones we have lost, to gather the ones still here, and to set our eyes on the year ahead. The ahi hold all three.

Te hautapu · The offering

When you visit the Mata Ariki ahi you will find some kānuka. Take a small amount and take a moment. Bring to mind those you have lost, those beside you, and the year ahead. Then place the kānuka into the fire and let the smoke carry your whakaaro. There is no right way to do this and there is no need to hurry. Tamariki are welcome to take part alongside their whānau.
