Te Ahi o Matariki

Ātea forecourt · 266 The Strand, Whakatāne

Nine fires stand on the Ātea forecourt, one for each whetū of Matariki, each carrying its star name in steel. You are welcome to place a sprig of kānuka into the ahi, a quiet hautapu for those we have lost, those still here, and the year ahead. Part of the Trust Horizon LIGHTUP Whakatāne Festival.

Tūhono

Inside Ātea · 266 The Strand, Whakatāne

Tūhono brings together the work of koro and moko. The soundscape and moving images are the work of Te Rangimōaho Iti; the paintings are those of his celebrated grandfather, Tāme Iti. Together they tell the story of whakapapa and legacy: the transmission of kōrero from the past, to the present and into the future. Part of the Trust Horizon LIGHTUP Whakatāne Festival.
