Tā moko · Sacred skin markings
Te Ahi Mānuka
The onsite tā moko studio at Ātea, a collaboration of indigenous artists working in ancient knowledge and spiritual wisdom.
Te Ahi Mānuka is a collaboration of indigenous artists infusing ancient knowledge and spiritual wisdom into sacred skin markings. Originally established from a solar-powered studio on the Gold Coast of Australia, the collective has returned home to Aotearoa and now works from within the creative hub of Ātea in Whakatāne.
Their studio is more than a place of artistic expression: it is a space where people reconnect with their whakapapa, strengthen their identity, and nurture the wellbeing of tinana, hinengaro and wairua. Through kōrero and connection, the artists work alongside each person to create markings that express their mauri, mana and unique journey, a pathway to healing, empowerment and reconnection with self, whānau and whakapapa.
Te Ahi Mānuka tours between Whakatāne, the Gold Coast and Christchurch through the year, so availability moves with the artists. The best way to connect is directly through their site: check current tour dates, read about each artist, and get in touch to start the kōrero about your own moko.
